The birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes and home to one of Europe's oldest universities, Alcalá de Henares is the closest of Madrid's classic day trips — and the one most directly tied to the Spanish language itself.
Alcalá de Henares was designated a UNESCO World Heritage City in 1998, recognised specifically for its role as the world's first planned university city — the University of Alcalá, founded by Cardinal Cisneros in 1499, became the model that many later university towns across Europe and the Americas were built on. Miguel de Cervantes, author of Don Quixote and arguably the most influential figure in the Spanish language, was born here in 1547; the city has leaned into that legacy ever since.
The Cervantes Birthplace Museum reconstructs a 16th-century home on the site where Cervantes is believed to have been born, with period rooms giving a sense of everyday domestic life at the time. The University of Alcalá itself is still an active, working university — its Renaissance courtyards and the ornate Paraninfo hall (where Spain's Miguel de Cervantes Prize, the language's highest literary honour, is awarded each year) are open to visitors. Plaza de Cervantes, the city's central square, and the Magisterial Cathedral round out the core sights.
Cercanías trains run from Madrid's Atocha or Chamartín stations directly to Alcalá de Henares in around 35–40 minutes — the shortest journey of any day trip covered on this site, and simple enough that a guided tour isn't necessary if you'd rather explore independently.
Half a day covers the essentials comfortably; the historic centre is compact enough to see on foot in a few hours, making this an easy pairing with a relaxed morning or afternoon back in Madrid on the same day.
Cervantes died in Madrid and is buried at the Convent of the Trinitarian nuns in the Barrio de las Letras — worth visiting both sites if the writer's life genuinely interests you, one bookending the other.
