Fast trains to walled cities, Roman aqueducts and royal monasteries, all within a day of Madrid.
All three current day trips run on Spain's high-speed AVE network or fast regional lines, which means you can genuinely fit any of them into a single day without an early-morning scramble. Toledo rewards a full day given the density of sights; Segovia works well as a half-day if you're tight on time; El Escorial sits in between, with a scale that benefits from at least a couple of unhurried hours. If you have more than one spare day, they combine well — Toledo and Segovia rarely get paired on the same day since they're in different directions from Madrid, but either pairs naturally with a slower morning in the city beforehand.
