C-5 Cercanías passengers crossing central Madrid will need an extra change at Atocha on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September, while Adif works temporarily split the line until 10:00 each morning.
When: Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September 2026, from the start of service until 10:00. Line: Madrid Cercanías C-5. What changes: trains in both directions will start or finish at Atocha. If you are continuing on C-5: you must leave the first train at Atocha and transfer to another C-5 train.
Renfe has scheduled a temporary change to Madrid's C-5 Cercanías line during the first part of Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September. Until 10:00, C-5 trains in both directions will start and terminate at Atocha.
That does not mean the entire C-5 is closed. If your trip ends at Atocha, the practical change may be small. If you need to continue on C-5 to the other side of the station, you will have to get off and transfer to another C-5 train at Atocha. The same arrangement operated on 19–20 September; that first weekend has already finished.
The biggest impact is on passengers making a through journey on C-5 across Atocha. The line links the Móstoles-El Soto and Humanes corridors through central Madrid; during the works window, Atocha becomes the break point between the two sides of the route.
For residents making early weekend trips, that means an extra movement that is not normally part of the journey. For travellers connecting to long-distance rail, AVE, coaches, flights or another timed booking after a C-5 trip, it is sensible not to rely on your usual minimum interchange time. Renfe has not published a single number of extra minutes for every journey, so we are not going to invent one.
Renfe's official notice limits the change to the period from the start of service until 10:00 on each of the two remaining dates, 26 and 27 September. A more recent local service update checked on 21 September confirms that the 19–20 September window has finished and that the next planned windows remain 26–27 September with the same 10:00 end time.
The official notice does not extend this particular split beyond 10:00. Railway works can still create operational changes on the day, however, so check Renfe or CRTM before leaving if you have a tight connection or an important appointment.
The temporary operating change is tied to Adif works at Atocha Cercanías. Renfe says the project is intended to increase station capacity and benefit the C-3, C-4 and C-5 lines.
The work has been placed on weekends to reduce disruption when passenger numbers are lower than on weekdays. For this specific notice, the published operational consequence is on C-5: Atocha temporarily acts as the terminus for trains arriving from both sides until 10:00.
The distinction matters. Renfe has not announced a full shutdown of C-5 or a replacement bus service for this particular works window. Trains continue to operate on both sides of Atocha; what temporarily disappears is the ability to remain on the same train through Atocha during the affected hours.
So the useful question is not automatically “what alternative route do I need?” but “does my journey cross Atocha?” If it does, plan for the extra transfer and give yourself more breathing room.
